University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill filed written documents in court asking that a lawsuit from the Students for Fair Admissions group be dismissed. If that group’s name looks familiar, it may be because it is the same group that sued Harvard University over its affirmative action admissions policies too. (That case concluded in November, but the judge’s ruling has yet been released.)
The school’s brief stated, “In its academic judgment, the university has determined that pursuing the educational benefits of diversity is integral to fulfilling its mission to prepare the next generation of leaders.” Students for Fair Admissions’ brief stated, “UNC’s use of race is the opposite of individualized; UNC uses race mechanically to ensure the admission of the vast majority of underrepresented minorities.”
