The 2020 architecture graduate school rankings have been released

Harvard topped the 2020 graduate architecture rankings.

DesignIntelligence (DI) released its 2020 architecture school rankings. DI compiled over 12,000 surveys from recruiters, students deans and department chairs this year. However, only the 4,000 surveys from recruiters are used to determine the actual rankings.

Without further ado, the top graduate architecture programs are as follows:

  1. Harvard University
  2. Columbia University
  3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.)
  4. Yale University
  5. Cornell University

Furthermore, the top undergraduate programs in architecture are:

  1. Cornell University
  2. Rhode Island School of Design
  3. Rice University
  4. Cooper Union
  5. Syracuse University

On an interesting side note, DI noted an uptick in undergraduate architecture students who were NOT looking to pursue graduate studies in the field. The most cited reason for the unwillingness was concern about high tuition and mounting student debt. We hope the schools are noting these ‘market signals’ and are working hard to reduce costs and improve students’ educational return on investments.

Finally, there are tons of graduate school rankings systems just waiting to be found on the Internet. While this isn’t meant to be disparaging as many of them are well researched and thought out, we do want to remind you that it is always far more important to follow your passions and find the program that is the best fit for your particular profile and needs. Only there will you optimize your educational experience and give yourself the best chance to succeed.
