Fortune has published its 2022 Masters in Data Science Rankings. Many of the 28 programs on their list have acceptance rates north of 50% with 28th-ranked Willamette University having a 94% acceptance rate.
Michigan, Harvard, and Minnesota took the top three spots this year. This is in deep contrast to the 2021 AI and Data Science Master’s Rankings by Forbes that listed MIT, Stanford, and Carnegie Mellon in their top three spots. Granted, these are different rankings by different organizations, but we hope it shows just how much variability exists between different rankings from traditional and trustworthy organizations such as Fortune and Forbes.
We have always advised applicants to take any and all rankings with a proverbial ‘grain of salt.’ Instead, we have urged them to consider their personal fit factors and understand rankings can — and do — change. A program ranked number one when one applies could be outside the top five when that same individual is a new graduate seeking to (re)enter the workforce.
One of the unique and critical factors to consider with regard to masters in data science programs is program length. Some exceptionally strong programs can be completed in just one year. Other equally strong programs are two years in duration.
There is no easy answer for this. You need to examine your needs and your employability. If you feel you have a lot of the foundational skills already and have no need for a summer internship to make the transition into data science, a one-year program may be ideal for you. However, if you do not have solid foundational skills and feel a summer internship will help you “get your foot in the door,” then clearly a two-year program will likely provide ideal in your case.
