It’s been widely reported that Duke Professor Megan Neely stepped down as a director of graduate studies. She sent an email on Friday asking Chinese students to only speak English and it created quite a controversy. Part of the controversial email included, “Both faculty members replied that they wanted to write down the names so they could remember them if the students ever interviewed for an internship or asked to work with them for a master’s project.” We were surprised this didn’t get more coverage.
This doesn’t seem like something a professor, let alone two, would do. We would love to see if Duke looks into this in an attempt to track down the alleged professors. We don’t think – nor certainly hope – this is a common occurrence. However, consider this blog a public service announcement. If you do unfortunately happen to experience something like this, please don’t let it go unreported!
