Johns Hopkins University announced earlier today that it will open a School of Government and Policy at its Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C. This will be the first new academic division Johns Hopkins has launched since 2007.
The Washington, D.C. location was not selected by accident. In addition to giving students and faculty easy access to legislators and policymakers, the new school will also be able to collaborate with the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in areas such as climate, sustainability, and economics.
The new School of Government and Policy is expected to grow to serve about 250 graduate students. The search for its inaugural dean is not even officially under way yet and the target date for opening is tentatively set as Fall 2026. So if you are two years away from applying to grad school, this may be something to consider. Additionally, it is anticipated the new school will offer undergraduate electives upon its opening.
JHU President Ronald Daniels explained, “Anchored in our magnificent new home in the nation’s capital, the School of Government and Policy will bring novel expertise and insight informed by large-scale data sets to shape policy and address the challenges facing our nation and world. This new school will draw on our university’s existing strengths in international studies, public health, medicine and life sciences, and engineering and technology and offer a different approach to the work of government and policy, one that can help rebuild confidence in our institutions and advance new and needed approaches for more effective government.”
