The University of Michigan is threatening to fire graduate student teachers who do not return to work in time for the start of the fall semester. The fall semester starts on August 28. In a statement, the school simply stated in an email that striking graduate students will “likely be removed from the system as a course instructor.”

The university also stated its latest offer contained a $1,000 bonus as well as annual raises of 8%, 6%, and 6% over the next three years. Graduate school unionization is not necessarily new, but still appears to be rather early in its evolution.
