UC Santa Cruz fired 54 striking graduate student employees. The employees had refused to turn in final grades as part of their strike. The strike was not authorized by the union and the university claimed it was in violation of their current labor contract.

Lori Ketzler, the university’s executive vice chancellor, wrote, “It is extremely disappointing to us that we have to take such a drastic step, but we ultimately cannot retain graduate students as teaching assistants who will not fulfill their responsibilities.”
