The faculty at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law released a statement that Franklin Pierce’s policies were against their commitment to racial justice and voted to remove his name from the law school. Franklin Pierce is the US president from New Hampshire. He served from 1853 to 1857. He never owned slaves and expressed opposition to slavery. However, he was worried about fracturing the country and therefore opposed drastic steps (such as civil war) to end slavery. For now, at least, Franklin Pierce’s name remains on the school. A vote from the Board of Trustees would be needed to remove his name.
