In Law School Application Volumes

Law school applications surged 28% in 2020-2021 due to a large confluence of issues including the pandemic, George Floyd’s death, the presidential election cycle, rising law school graduate salaries, the economic slowdown, and increased interest in social justice. This amounted to what was essentially a tidal wave of applications and many law schools have been incentivizing admitted applicants to defer a year to help them control their class sizes after the unexpectedly high yields they experienced. The number of LSAT test-takers who scored between 175 and 180 doubled this year and starting salaries at the BigLaw firms jumped to $205,000 after remaining steady at $190,000 the past few years.
