With Morgan State University in Baltimore joining Xavier University in New Orleans, there appear to be some new medical school seats to help alleviate the current physician shortage. Additionally, these HBCUs are expected to train more African-American doctors to also perhaps better serve the health needs of often marginalized African-American communities. These two new HBCU medical schools will bring the total to six. We hope — and expect — these schools to increase interest in medical professions among African Americans in addition to helping to meet the physician shortage needs. We are hopeful that there will be more medical residencies available to accommodate these future medical school graduates. If medical residencies do not grow in lock step with the growth of the new medical schools, we fully expect the Caribbean medical school graduates to bear the brunt of the rejections.
