Morgan State University, a HBCU located in Baltimore, is exploring the possibility of opening a private, osteopathic medical school on its campus. A private company, Salud LLC, would build the medical school on the campus and raise the estimated $125 million through a large African American investment firm. The company has experience with seven medical schools in the US and abroad.

If Morgan State does move ahead with this, it would be the first new medical school at a HBCU in nearly 45 years and the very first osteopathic school at a HBCU. Morgan State President Dr. David Wilson noted that fewer African American men are entering medical school today than in the 1970s. He explained, “This is a unique opportunity not only to further the progress happening at Morgan but to do so in a way that could also reap huge benefits for the city of Baltimore, the state and the nation.”

As currently planned, the DO school could open in 2023 and have 550 students by its fourth year.
