If you’re hoping to attend the University of Notre Dame, there is an important trend you should understand before submitting your application: Notre Dame’s Restrictive Early Action (REA) applicant pool has more than doubled over the past decade, while the number of students admitted early has remained relatively stable.
That combination has made Notre Dame’s early admissions process dramatically more competitive.
For the Class of 2030, Notre Dame received a record 13,711 REA applications and admitted just 1,617 students, producing an early acceptance rate of approximately 11.8%. The university also deferred 2,608 applicants for consideration during Regular Decision.
For students planning to apply to the Class of 2031, these numbers provide an important warning: a strong application is no longer enough simply because it would have been competitive at Notre Dame several years ago.
📊 Notre Dame REA Applications Have More Than Doubled
Notre Dame’s early applicant pool has grown substantially since the Class of 2021.
Notre Dame’s own admissions announcements confirm the recent numbers, including 9,683 REA applications and 1,675 admissions for the Class of 2026, 11,163 applications and 1,701 admissions for the Class of 2027, 11,498 applications and 1,724 admissions for the Class of 2028, 12,917 applications and 1,669 admissions for the Class of 2029, and 13,711 applications and 1,617 admissions for the Class of 2030.
The earlier years show the same long-term pattern: Notre Dame received 6,020 REA applications and admitted 1,470 students for the Class of 2021, while the Class of 2022 had 6,598 applicants and 1,636 admits.
📉 The Decline in REA Acceptance Rates Is the Bigger Story
The number of applications is impressive, but the acceptance-rate trend is even more revealing.
The REA acceptance rate has fallen from approximately 24.4% for the Class of 2021 to 11.8% for the Class of 2030.
That’s a decline of roughly 52% in the early acceptance rate.
Put differently, about one in four REA applicants was admitted a decade ago. For the Class of 2030, fewer than one in eight was admitted.
📈 Why Has Notre Dame Become So Much More Competitive?
There isn’t one explanation for the increase.
Notre Dame has become an increasingly desirable national university, and its applicant pool has expanded geographically and socioeconomically.
The university also has a highly attractive combination of academic reputation, undergraduate outcomes, alumni network, athletics and distinctive institutional identity.
More recently, Notre Dame has made significant changes to financial aid and access. Beginning with the Class of 2029 admissions cycle, Notre Dame introduced Pathways to Notre Dame, including need-blind admissions for domestic and international applicants and eliminating loans from need-based financial aid offers. Notre Dame described the initiative as a major expansion of affordability and access.
Those policies can make a Notre Dame education more attainable for qualified families who previously might have assumed the university was financially out of reach.
The result is a potentially powerful combination:
More students want Notre Dame + more students believe they can afford Notre Dame = more applications.
🎯 Does Applying REA Give You an Admissions Advantage?
This is one of the most important questions for Class of 2031 applicants.
Not according to Notre Dame.
Notre Dame explicitly states that its REA program does not provide an admissions advantage. The university says it admits REA applicants whom the admissions committee believes would also be admitted through Regular Decision. Applicants whose files are close to competitive consideration may instead be deferred for review alongside the larger Regular Decision pool.
This is an important distinction.
Applying REA can provide an earlier admissions decision and priority consideration for merit scholarships, but students should not assume that simply checking the REA box will increase their probability of admission. Notre Dame currently lists November 1 as its REA deadline and January 4 as its Regular Decision deadline.
📝 When Should You Apply REA?
Notre Dame’s advice is straightforward: apply REA if you can present your strongest application by November 1.
That generally means you should have:
• Strong junior-year grades
• A compelling academic record
• Strong teacher recommendations
• Thoughtful and polished essays
• Meaningful extracurricular involvement
• A coherent explanation of why Notre Dame fits your goals
• Test scores, if submitting them, that strengthen your application
Notre Dame currently remains test-optional through at least the 2026–27 academic year.
If your senior-year academic record is likely to improve significantly, or you need additional time to develop your application, applying Regular Decision may make more sense than rushing an incomplete application simply to meet the REA deadline.

🧭 1. Don’t Treat Notre Dame as a “Target” School Based on Old Acceptance Rates
A student who would have had a reasonable chance of admission through REA several years ago may face substantially greater competition today.
Admissions statistics from five or ten years ago are useful for understanding trends, but they should not be used as a prediction of an individual applicant’s chances.
The current applicant pool matters much more.
🧠 2. Your Application Needs to Be More Than Academically Strong
Notre Dame describes its admissions process as holistic. Its admissions materials emphasize academic preparation, intellectual curiosity, leadership, service, personal qualities and alignment with the university’s mission.
That means a strong GPA and impressive test score, where submitted, are important—but they don’t tell the entire story.
Applicants should think carefully about the narrative connecting their academic interests, extracurricular activities, accomplishments and personal experiences.
✍️ 3. The Essays Matter
When thousands of academically accomplished students compete for roughly 1,600 REA spots, the written portions of the application become an important opportunity to differentiate yourself.
A generic essay about wanting to attend a prestigious university isn’t likely to make the strongest possible impression.
Your essays should communicate something that admissions officers cannot learn simply by looking at your transcript.
🏫 4. Build a Balanced College List
Notre Dame should be considered a reach for many applicants, even those with excellent academic credentials.
That doesn’t mean students shouldn’t apply.
It means applicants should avoid building a college list around Notre Dame and a handful of similarly selective universities.
A balanced list should include schools where your academic and personal profile makes you genuinely competitive, as well as appropriate reaches and financial options.
💰 5. Consider the Financial Picture
Notre Dame’s expanded financial-aid policies make the university particularly interesting for applicants who previously assumed that attending a highly selective private university would be financially unrealistic.
The university says it is need-blind for all students and has eliminated loans from need-based financial aid offers under Pathways to Notre Dame.
That makes financial-aid planning an important part of the admissions process—not an afterthought.
🔮 Could the REA Acceptance Rate Fall Below 10%?
It is possible, although there is no basis for predicting that it will happen in the Class of 2031.
If applications continue increasing while the number of students admitted through REA remains around the 1,600–1,700 range, simple mathematics will push the acceptance rate lower.
For example, another 5% increase in applications from 13,711 would produce approximately 14,400 REA applications. If Notre Dame admitted roughly 1,600 students again, the resulting acceptance rate would be close to 11%.
A larger increase could push the rate closer to 10%.
But applicants should not treat any projected rate as an official Notre Dame forecast. Admissions decisions depend on the size and quality of the applicant pool, the university’s enrollment objectives and other factors.
⚠️ One Important Warning About “Early” Admissions Statistics
Notre Dame’s REA program is not the same as binding Early Decision.
REA is non-binding. Students admitted to Notre Dame have until May 1 to decide whether to enroll. Students applying REA may also apply to other non-binding Early Action programs, although Notre Dame restricts applicants from applying to binding Early Decision programs under its REA rules.
That distinction matters when comparing Notre Dame with schools that use binding Early Decision.
A high early acceptance rate at an ED school cannot necessarily be compared directly with Notre Dame’s REA acceptance rate because the applicant pools and enrollment commitments are different.
