There are many ways high school seniors inadvertently sabotage their admission chances. Here are three that will probably surprise you.

1. Social Media

Don’t put anything offensive in your public social media profile. Or, if you insist on exercising your freedom of speech rights, at least be aware of what it can cost you in terms of four plus years of hard work. I may be old-fashioned but I pretend that anything you put out there can be used against you.

2. Getting the Name Wrong

“And that’s why I really want to attend [name of a different school].” You probably think this can happen no more than once or twice a year at a school that receives thousands of applications, right? Actually, you would be wrong. Spend the extra minute to make sure the school you name in your application essays.

3. Incorrect Information

The whole point of the application process is to paint yourself as a worthy and well qualified candidate to take the next big step in your educational journey. And to prove you are, indeed, a match made in heaven with the college, you throw out some factoids to demonstrate your due diligence. Make sure those facts are correct. Don’t name the Nobel Laureate you’re dying to study under if he teaches at the cross-town rival school.
