In Higher Education

At cocktail parties and holiday gatherings, conversations often turn to whether a college degree still matters in an era dominated by professional certifications. In his Wall Street Journal article, “It’s Too Early to Write Off College Degrees,” contributor Callum Borchers explores the enduring value of higher education.

Mr. Borchers argues that during the pandemic, skills-based hiring began to gain traction, fueling optimism that white-collar recruiting was undergoing a major shift. Many believed companies might finally move beyond their fixation on college degrees and years of experience—a vision that felt egalitarian and inclusive. Yet today’s tight labor market tells a different story. With entry-level roles thinned out and many mid-level managers cut, employers are once again leaning on traditional benchmarks like college degrees when filling positions. According to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, by 2031 an estimated 42% of jobs will require a bachelor’s degree, up from 35% today.
